Interesting that the deer payed little attention in regards to being spooked, just treated him as it would any other animal (which of course he is).
You were obviously in the right place at the right time. I don't suppose he saw you either!

Notice that the deer remained absolutely motionless. This is the primary defense of many prey animals. Often times people, and predators, will not notice an animal unless they detect motion; especially if their eyesight is a little poor. Then again, the man might have just been off in a dream somewhere. If you see a deer in a frozen state like this, never make eye contact. If you do, then the deer knows it has been seen, and it will be away in a heartbeat.
